1.
Check your yard for escape routes:
Fences gates can shift or holes can develop under the fence,
especially in this excessively dry weather that we have experienced.
2.
Inspect your leash:
Is it still in good shape or is it fraying so that a sharp
tug could break it?
3.
Tag and microchip your pet:
Collars can fall off so microchipping is an excellent source
of identification for your pet. Every single lost pet that is brought in to
Cherokee Animal Clinic and Cherokee Cat Clinic is checked for a microchip. Many pets have been reunited with their
frantic owners thanks to this little piece of technology.
4.
Protect your pet from loud noises:
Noise phobias are a big risk factor for escapes, especially
around celebrations that include fireworks.
Be sure your pet is in a safe place before the festivities begin.
5.
For clients who carry their pets in a
truck, use a kennel.
Loose dogs in the beds of trucks are just accidents waiting
to happen. Yes, your dog may be one that
will never jump out, but what happens when the truck comes to a sudden stop or
swerves unexpectedly. Plan for those
disasters by having your pet confined in a secured kennel.
6.
Use caution when visiting dog parks:
Do the other dogs seem friendly? Are they about the same size and temperament
as your dog? Small or timid dogs can be
frightened by larger or more aggressive dogs and run away or, worse, get hurt.
7.
Take some individual precautions:
Every case is different, but just use common sense when out
with your pet to make the pet as comfortable and safe in the environment as
possible. Vaccinating your pet when
he/she will be in a common area with other animals (not just cats and dogs!) is
a very good tip.
